I watched Monster’s Ball last night. I’m glad I did. It was worth the $4 to purchase it on Pay Per View.
I don’t care what any of you say, Halle Berry gave an outstanding performance and she deserved to get an Oscar. Now I fully understand why she and Denzel got the Oscar nods. Everyone wants to keep the two of them packaged up into a neat little box, but they both stepped into roles that they would not normally play and that is what caught the attention of many.
Halle’s character was tortured, confused and lost. I don’t know how the sex scene was in the theater but they showed the director’s cut on pay per view and god dayum! I was like oh my god. I called my mom into the room when it started and we were both looking at each other like “what the fuck?”
I thought Billy Bob did a good job as well. I spent a lot of the movie wondering what Anjelina Jolie saw in him, but whatever. There’s someone for everyone as my granny always says. Heath Ledger’s last scene in the movie was a shocker. I have loved him ever since he was in “The Patriot” with Mel Gibson.
All the characters in this movie were damaged in some way including Peter Boyle as Hank’s father. My favorite line of his in the entire movie - “Your mama wasn’t shit.” The line I liked the least was “I used to love a little nigger juice too.”
Mos Def in a small supporting role was good too. He’s becoming quite the actor. Even Puffy was good in it.
I would recommend this movie to anyone interested in watching it.

I thought Halle Berry did a fantastic job, and deserved to win. Loved the film for its uncompromising nature. The very end was one of the best movie endings I've ever seen.
i kinda resented that movie. i thought halle's performance was nothing stellar at all. sorry, but if that's an Oscar winning performance, then what the hell what Angela Basset's perfromance in "What's Love Got To Do With It". i think it's unfortunate, that so many black actresses have been overlooked over the years for great work. but seeing Halle win for this role, is , well, for lack of a better term, disgraceful. halle berry is a beautiful, and talented lady. however, as far as her acting skills? i think if she wasn't so pretty, she'd be a regular on one of the daytime soaps. that's my opinion, and i'm sticking to it.
I actually don't think Halle Berry is all that great an actress. But I think with this role, she just found something that "clicked" and made magic. Similar, I think, to Hilary Swank in "Boys Don't Cry." I don't think either of them will find a role as good ever again in their careers.
I don't think I'm denying that other people have turned in performances that deserved Oscars. I'm saying that having never seen the movie until two days ago, I can now understand what the hubbub was about. What was so bad about her performance? What was so bad about her winning it for playing something other than the beautiful light skinned black woman that everyone wants or desires?
Halle ain't Hollywood. Any beefs that anyone has with the system and its failure to honor Bassett shouldn't allow any fair viewer to begrudge or resent Berry. 'Sides, beauty just got Halle in the door; it doesn't give Berry many opportunities to act and she still had to work her tail off to make something of her opportunities. Stick to your opinion out of being right, not for spite.
So few people conceive of Halle as anything but the beautiful light skinned black woman that everyone wants or desires. All that some can see sometimes is what is, not what could be.
I personally like Halle. It seems like there is always some controversial talk about movies in regards to black actresses and their roles, blah, blah, blah. I just enjoy the movie for what it is without analyzin' all kinds of otha shit that comes along with it. I will be watchin' the movie tonite though and I am confident I will enjoy it. Thanks for the positive review about it Nique! :D
I thought the movie told a beautiful story about emotions and humanity and the way that people can change. hank's attitude towards black people in the beginning of the movie changed dramatically after he met Leticia. Notice the before and after interaction with Mos Def.
I think Halle deserved the Oscar because she acted her ass off in that role. I haven't seen her so emotional since Losing Isaiah.
I'm still torn on whether or not I think Halle Berry was better in Monster's Ball or Dorothy Dandridge. But I digress...
I know a lot of people got up in arms about Monster's Ball. To be honest, (and here's my crazy spin on things) I think it was all just a big metaphor...I think the story was so extreme just to get across a point: you never know where you're going to find love.
But that's just one of the things I thought about it.
